a devotional by Jack Ambrosius

This study is written for you to discover the answers yourself. If you do not know what a word means I would advise you to look the word up on the internet. Also, take some time thinking about the answers and what the answers mean for your life.

Getting started:

  • Think of a time as a child when you went against your parents’ wishes and your parents showed mercy to you? What did you do? How did you feel afterwards?

  • Big picture- Read Ephesians 2:1-10
    • Ephesians was written to a church in Ephesus that was falling into a works based mentality.
  • Read Ephesians 2:1-3
    • Read Romans 3:23
    • Who is dead in their trespasses? Why?
    • What are some examples of how you followed or follow the prince of the power of the air (the Devil)?
  • Read Ephesians 2:4-7
    • What is God’s response to our trespasses?
    • What does mercy mean?
    • What does it mean to be seated with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus?
  • Read Ephesians 2:8-9
    • Read Romans 3:23- 24
    • What does grace mean?
    • Read Ephesians 2:3 again.
      • Could we have obtained this faith in Christ ourselves? Why?
      • What did we do to earn this grace?
    • Read Ephesians 2:10 and Isaiah 64:8
      • What does it mean to be God’s workmanship?
      • What good works are we supposed to do?
        • How do we not boast in these good works?
      • Apply:
        • Explain a time in your life when you showed mercy towards someone else?
        • How does this concept of saved by grace change the way that you live your life?
        • What practical steps can you take to not live your life in a works based mentality?
      • Jack’s Thoughts:
        • This passage goes through where we were without Christ, what God did for us, and who we are now in Christ. Paul pushes the fact that we did nothing and that we cannot do anything to earn our salvation. Paul stresses that our salvation is a gift from God. Understanding this concept can change the entire way that you live your life. Once you realize that your stance in Christ is not gauged on your actions, it will free you from a works based mentality.
I know that I am guilty of thinking God is disappointed with me whenever I do something wrong – and that is far from the truth. God is nothing but over joyed with me because He chose me. The fact that God chose me allows me to not have to live in a mindset of making much of myself. It radically changes my mindset to making much of God in every aspect of my life, because I have already found my approval in Christ. I do not have to look for it anywhere else. So please rest in the truth that you did nothing to earn your salvation. God chose you, and He loves you. You do not need to walk in a works-based mindset trying to make much of yourself. You can be freed of that! You can start making much of Jesus by looking to glorify God in everything that you do, instead of trying to glorify yourself.

God bless,
Jack Ambrosius
