“The Nation of God”
a devotional by Sarah Lyle
A few weeks ago at Lake Lundgren Bible Camp, a missionary speaker said an interesting thought that I just had to share.
Think of all the students in your school. When you look at some of them, you know they or their parents or a past generation came from a different country. You can tell what nationality people are by what they look like, how they dress, and how they talk.
Sometimes, though, it is harder to tell what nation they came from because they lost their accent, or wear normal American clothing. They blend into the crowd and don’t stand out.
Just as you can tell what nation people come from, others around you should be able to tell what nation YOU come from: The nation of God.
“…you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” –Exodus 19:6
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” –1 Peter 2:9
If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, you belong to a holy nation. You are God’s priests, mediators for Him. That means that you tell people who don’t know about God all about Him. It also means that the way you dress, act, and talk should mirror the nation you come from. Do you wear clothing that makes you stand out as if you were from a Holy nation? Do your actions and words match the nationality that you are?
If they don’t, then you are blending into the crowd and matching your worldly nation instead of your spiritual one. I want to challenge you to think about what parts of your life are lining up with who you are in Christ. Instead of being an American, Canadian, or European, become a Christian. Then you will shine with the light of Christ, and those around you will know what nation you belong to.
“Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky.” – Philippians 2:15b
